Hi, I probably can't come to this BoF but I can't help thinking that if even d.o finds it difficult to upgrade between Drupal versions, for all the reasons you mention, then something is seriously wrong with Drupal. It will be great if you manage to come up with some strategies that help d.o to migrate, but if you also are able to feed back to the Drupal project leads this experience of "eating Drupal's own dogfood" and how Drupal could better support migration between versions, that would be awesome. After all, the pain that is felt by the relative experts working on d.o is amplified for every lesser expert working on any other site! :)

Hi,

So your statement "I can't help thinking that if even d.o finds it difficult to upgrade between Drupal versions, for all the reasons you mention, then something is seriously wrong with Drupal." is great, because its an often-repeated sentiment. However, its really not true. If drupal.org was just a show site, or a presentation site, then I'd fully agree with what you said. However, drupal.org includes project management, git integration, packaging integration and even testbot framework. It is actually one of the most complex single sites you will ever run into. Upgrading a site like this in _any_ framework is a huge project. That we manage to maintain this website at all with a largely volunteer team is a testament to drupal as a framework.
