Drupal and academia

Gerben Zaagsma's picture

Drupal is becoming an increasingly popular content management platform in the academic world. It is used to power library websites and digital resources, distributions like OpenScholar and Drupal Commons are used to create community websites, and so on. An interesting example is the Netherlands where several humanities research institutes have launched major Drupal-based websites in the past 2 years. Meanwhile a new project entitled Drupal for Humanists, based in the USA, aims to lower the (perceived) threshold to use Drupal in various humanities settings. And there is much more going on!

This session is intended as a get together for people working with Drupal in the academic world to meet and discuss experiences, and a way to identify the various types of academic websites that are currently being built with Drupal.

Questions to be discussed might include:
- what experiences with Drupal and its various distros do people have?
- why and when to use a distro?
- what institutional issues can arise from using Drupal?
- learning people how to work with Drupal
- etc

I'm going to be there!

Will surely attend, unfortunately there aren't many occasions for discussing drupal in educational contexts

The University of Bergen will attend this session. Looking forward to meeting you all!

I just published a blog post that might be of interest:

Our community site is at community.ja.net. We aim to provide a platform for our community, who are primarly technical staff at further and higher education institutes, to enable collaboration and discussion with us and with each other.

Sadly was unable to make the full session, but very interested in these discussions for the future.

The EU project QLectives is using Drupal 7.x for creating a general distribution for scientists called QScience. The project has not been launched publicly, but in the next month, we are going to replace the web site of the econophysics with our Drupal prototype.

What make QScience different from other distributions is probably that it can be entirely exported to a text file (content and config) and shared through the Patterns module. A deliverable containing the design principles of QScience can be found here.

We have a QScience github repo containing some of modules we are developing.

Was a shame to miss the session today, we are a higher education institution in the UK who are moving to Drupal.

Are there any notes from the session, or would anyone like to organise another quick discussion (even just a one-to-one) during this conference? (I am around all day Friday.)

Michael

hey Michael, i'm from the University of the Arts London, Friday is good for me

i have also missed this session. can i join your meeting?

I am around tomorrow, not Friday, for a retake.

But can only do today, lunch time outside bof rooms are later in aft?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the replies!

Today at 12pm outside the BoF room St. Monitz would be great for more discussions.

If some people can't make today, I would still be keen to meet on Friday morning too (post on here and we could organise a time/place).

Does this suit everyone?

Michael

see you after a powernap :)

Hi all,

Great to meet you all today! :)

If anyone is interested in discussing Drupal and academia further, I'm proposing to meet again tomorrow outside St Moritz room (same place!) at 11am.
